Remodel your home or build new? Start with how you want to live

If you love your location but the house no longer works for you, a renovation deserves a serious look. If the structure, layout or property would force too many compromises, a custom home may offer a better route to the result you want.
Start with the problems you want to solve, then compare what each option would involve.
Decide what is worth keeping
List the things you value about the current property: the neighborhood, privacy, daylight, outdoor space or a room that already works well. Separate those from the features you have simply learned to tolerate.
Have the proposed renovation assessed before assuming that a wall, addition or new room arrangement will work. Structure, services and site constraints can influence the options.
Compare the whole investment
Compare the physical construction scope first, including related repairs and site work. Then account for land acquisition, design, approvals and financing where applicable. Temporary housing, moving and storage are household expenses alongside the construction budget. Confirm which costs the builder actually includes, and keep a reserve for uncertainty.
A new home should also be considered as a specific design on a specific property, rather than an abstract price per square foot.
Include the time away from home
For Nix renovations other than a suitable bathroom-only remodel, plan to live elsewhere during construction, or at least the initial phases. We can help facilitate finding and renting a home if needed.
For a custom build, our starting ranges are 2–3 months of planning and 8–16 months of building. Each project can take less or more time.
Bring your property, priorities and investment range to a conversation about renovating or building. We can identify the investigations needed to compare your options on a realistic basis. Nix Industries works with homeowners across North Carolina.
