How Can You Tell if a Wall Is Load-Bearing, and Can It Be Removed?

You cannot reliably decide that a wall is safe to remove from its location or the direction of nearby framing alone. Have the existing structure assessed before planning demolition. A load-bearing wall may be removable with an appropriate design and the required approvals.
For homeowners opening a kitchen or connecting living spaces, the investigation should happen while the layout is being developed.
Follow the support through the house
A wall can carry loads, contain plumbing or wiring, or perform another role in the building. Removing it may affect the supports and foundation below as well as the framing above.
The Building America Solution Center explains the importance of a continuous load path. Your project's structural assessment needs to address the actual house, connections and supporting conditions.

The illustration explains a general concept. It is not a member-sizing detail or a temporary-support plan.
Price the completed opening
The scope may include engineering, structural work, moved services, inspections and repairs to floors, ceilings and adjoining walls. Ask how far those repairs extend and how the new opening will meet the remaining cabinetry or trim.
Discuss the design implications too. A dropped beam or remaining support can affect the sightlines and furniture plan. The widest opening is not automatically the most useful arrangement.
Plan construction and living arrangements together
The responsible professionals should determine the construction method and any temporary support. Do not cut framing or remove supports to test whether a wall is carrying load.
For structural renovation work with Nix Industries, plan to live elsewhere during construction, or at least during the initial construction phases. We can help facilitate finding and renting a home if needed.
Bring photos from both sides of the wall, available drawings and information about the rooms above and below. We can discuss the assessment and planning steps needed before the opening is priced or promised. Nix Industries works with homeowners across North Carolina.
