In What Order Should You Renovate a House?

A home renovation generally moves from investigation and planning through approvals, demolition, structural and service work, inspections, finishes and closeout. The exact order depends on the house, scope and products involved.
The goal is to make decisions and complete the hidden work before installing finishes that would need to be disturbed again.
Establish the scope and prepare the house
Confirm the layout, important selections, pricing and required approvals. Investigate known problems, such as water intrusion, so the underlying cause is addressed alongside the visible repairs.
Plan access, protection, storage and living arrangements before demolition. For Nix renovations, homeowners live elsewhere during construction or at least the initial construction phases. Suitable bathroom-only remodels are the exception we assess individually. We can help facilitate finding and renting a home if needed.

Open the work and complete the systems
Demolition reveals conditions that may need further assessment. Review any change to scope, cost or timing through the project's agreed approval process.
Structural work and electrical, plumbing and mechanical routes then need to be coordinated. Complete the required inspections before concealing the relevant work. A finished wall should not get ahead of an unresolved service route or approval.
Install finishes in the right relationship
Cabinetry, flooring, painting, tile, countertops and fixtures are coordinated around their actual installation requirements. There is no universal rule that every floor goes before every cabinet.
Countertops may need measurements after the cabinet arrangement is ready, followed by fabrication and installation. That dependency belongs in the schedule rather than being treated as an unexplained delay.
Close out the project
Finish connections, testing, required approvals and the walkthrough. Record remaining items and agree on how they will be completed. Keep care instructions and relevant project records.
For your renovation with Nix Industries, ask what controls the next milestone and which decision is needed from you. Those questions make progress easier to follow than judging the schedule only by how finished a room looks. Nix Industries works with homeowners across North Carolina.
