Can You Live in Your House During a Renovation?

For a Nix renovation, plan to live elsewhere during construction, or at least during the initial construction phases. Bathroom-only remodels are the one project type where we consider having the household stay home during the work.

We discuss the arrangements before construction starts. If needed, Nix Industries can help facilitate finding and renting a suitable home for the period away.

When staying home may work

For a bathroom-only remodel, staying home may be practical when another suitable bathroom is available, essential services remain usable and the household can be separated from the work.

We assess that arrangement for the actual project. If the only usable bathroom is being removed from service, or the work expands into a broader renovation, plan to relocate.

For kitchens and other projects, arrange housing early

Demolition, noise, material movement, service interruptions and changing access routes can affect more than the room on the drawings. Our approach is to plan accommodation around construction instead of expecting the household to live around those conditions.

Tell us about your housing budget, pets, school routes, work routines and location preferences. We can help facilitate the search and rental arrangements. Confirm the rental term, deposits, utilities and extension options before committing.

Agree on when you can return

Some projects require living elsewhere throughout construction. Others may allow a return after the initial phases. Agree on that milestone with the project team, based on safe access, usable services, separation from remaining work, cleaning and any applicable approvals or re-entry requirements.

Keep rental dates flexible until the return milestone is sufficiently confirmed. Looking nearly finished is not the same as being ready for the household.

For older homes, discuss relevant hazards before demolition. North Carolina provides lead-paint renovation guidance for pre-1978 housing; the appropriate professionals should address applicable requirements.

Share your living-arrangement needs when discussing your renovation. We can plan the construction and the period away together. Nix Industries works with homeowners across North Carolina.
